Quick Overview

Have you ever been stopped when entering a business because of your service dog? Uninformed employees with the best of intentions are sometimes unaware of the federal laws for service dogs can often cause an embarrassing and frustrating situation for everyone.

Here is a simple and effective tool for all service dog owners. When you enter a business and one of the employees approach you about your service animal, you can simply hand them a Service Animal Information Card. Instead of having to remember and repeat the federal guidelines regarding service dogs to the store employee, the Service Animal Information Card will give them all the information they need to know about the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to Service Animals, in one convenient place.

Sold in packs of 25 so you'll have plenty to hand out!

The front of the card says "Service Dogs: What Your Business Needs to Know" and indicates your dog is a Service Dog - an animal individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities. The toll free phone number to the U.S. Department of Justice is also listed on the card should the business owner have more questions. The back of the card summarizes the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to Service Dogs. It also outlines the questions businesses can and cannot ask.

These professionally printed cards measure 3.5” x 2” when folded – the same size as a standard business card so they can be easily tucked in your wallet or your service dog’s vest within easy reach.

- Give it to businesses when you enter
- Has the toll-free government number they can call if they have questions
- Sold in packs of 25
- Provides them with ADA information including what they can't ask (see below)

The back of the card says:

“In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act

Businesses May ask:
1) Is this a Service Dog?
2) What tasks does the Service Dog perform?

Businesses May Not:
1) Require special identification for the dog.
2) Ask about the person's disability.
3) Charge additional fees because of the dog.
4) Refuse admittance, isolate, segregate, or treat this person less favorably than other patrons.

A person with a disability cannot be asked to remove his service animal from the premises unless:

1) The animal is out of control and the animal's owner cannot or does not take effective action to control it.
2) The animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others.

NOT: Any business that sells or prepares food must allow service animals in public areas even if state or local health codes prohibit animals on the premises.

Refusal to provide equal access to people with disabilities with service animals is a federal civil rights violation, provided by the American Disability Act of 1990. Violators of the ADA can be required to pay money damages and penalties.“
